The Beauties of Nature

Literature Text

Flowers swaying in the wind,
Trees, verdant with piney scent.
Birds taking flight, inactivity hard to find,
Matriarch clouds, swollen fruits thunderous in descent.

All these things and many more,
rarely thought of, seldom seen.
Only found in poems and lore,
places where none of us has been.

The Age of building and technology,
has little place for Mother Nature.
Sorrowful 'tis, to pen this eulogy,
She has been made a caricature.

“The woods are lovely, dark and deep”,
“A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,”,
Works of art which make men weep.

They were not conceived,
with regimented systems, in ugly buildings.
Rather, where we feel naturally relieved,
close to the earth, uninhibited impulses and feelings.

Eight hours, seven hours, nine hours left,
in name of routine, what do we make of them?
Bereft of freedom, minds quick and deft,
yet each one juggling time, each a gem.

Settings which leave little to imagination,
stifling the mind, our world remains ignored.
While concrete hardly grants inspiration,
to wandering threads, blinkered and bored.

To disregard the charm, delights the world has on offer,
a price must be paid, steep indeed.
Who scoffs at them, will have forever bridled his coffer,
For afflatus, inspiration is necessary for brilliance, the basic need.

To say -
“Miles to go before I sleep.”,
One needs motivation, coming from something.
That something, that somewhere, has been lost,
to be found. Mother Nature embraces all,
nurtures, guides, fuels one forward.
The beauty, charm and calm are food for thought,
heart and soul.

It may come as a surprise, but this is my first "conscious" poem. I have never written for myself, on a theme I believe in. Only schoolwork before. Ironically I was given an assignment from school to write on "The beauties of Nature". Normally, anyone would attempt to emulate poets such as Wordsworth (Daffodils), likely unsuccessfully. Instead I turned it into a critique I felt strongly on, about how we as school children (and adults) are not exposed to the outside world. This does not only apply to Nature, but "holistic" development of a student too.
